About CMSE

The Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE) is located at the University of Mississippi. CMSE seeks to improve the quality of mathematics and science education in Mississippi by promoting interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. To achieve this mission, CMSE works closely with students, current teachers and administrators, and those involved in preparing teachers for the future.

CMSE offers a variety of programs and opportunities for all who are involved in mathematics and/or science education. Through funding provided by the Mississippi Department of Education, Project PrIME (Promoting Innovation in Mathematics Education) aims to increase student achievement by increasing current middle school (4th – 8th grade) teachers’ mathematical content knowledge and supporting teachers as they utilize this knowledge in their instructional practices. CMSE also offers professional development sessions for teachers and administrators.

Through the following programs, CMSE currently reaches middle school and high school students to stimulate and promote interest in STEM fields: MathCamp, Engineering Camp, MATHCOUNTS, Engineering Competition, and visits to local schools.CMSE works with undergraduate and graduate students who are the future teachers, school administrators, and leaders in Mississippi.

The ongoing work of CMSE contributes to the overall economic advancement of the state of Mississippi through helping to improve the number and quality of:

  • students entering STEM fields in Mississippi
  • new elementary education teachers who will enter the classroom with a heightened understanding of mathematics and the ability to effectively communicate it to students,
  • in-service teachers who understand and can effectively teach mathematics and science, and
  • graduate students who receive Ph.D.’s in mathematics or science education with a commitment to staying in this state and promoting improvements in teacher preparation and performance.

Achieving these goals will result in a larger workforce that has the skills needed to provide the high-tech workforce needed by current businesses in this state and to attract future corporate ventures.
